How to Use Your Nervana PEMF Wearable Device

1         Before You Start

Use Nervana only as directed by your prescribing clinician and according to the instructions included with your device. Do not use the device if you have:

  • An implanted pacemaker, defibrillator, or other active implanted electronic device

  • A known pregnancy

  • Any condition your healthcare provider has identified as a contraindication

If you have questions, contact your provider before starting therapy.

2        Charging the Device & Use of the Rechargeable Battery Pack
  1. Plug the charging cable into the rechargeable battery pack. It is recommended to use the one-foot USB-A-to-USB-C connector cable and AC power adapter (aka "brick" or wall charger) accessories that are enclosed with your device.

  2. The battery itself has four inputs: one USB-C input and one Micro USB input, as well as two USB-A inputs.

  3. To charge and recharge the battery pack, use the USB connector cable from the battery's USB-C input and plug the other end of the cable into the AC power adapter (wall charger) which takes the USB-A end of the cable.

  4. Charge until the indicator shows a full battery (four blue lights).

  5. Unplug the battery from the wall charger.

Always ensure the device is adequately charged before starting a session. A fully charged battery pack can last for several days and multiple sessions. A fully charged battery will display four blue lights. As battery power diminishes, the blue lights will indicate battery status and gradually fewer blue lights appear on the indicator. (i.e. four lights, three, two and then one). When two blue lights appear on the indicator, the remaining battery power is below 50 percent, and it is time to recharge the battery.

General Information & Safety section of the web site.

3          Position the Wearable & the Battery Pack

Except for patients who have received Nervana PEMF for post-operative therapy, Nervana PEMF wraps are designed to be placed directly over or around the area being treated, such as:

  • Low back or neck

  • Shoulder, elbow, wrist

  • Hip, knee, ankle, or foot

  • Surrounding muscles or soft tissue

For purposes of using the battery pack and device together, each of the five Nervana PEMF therapy devices has a pocket with a velcro back to attach to the device; and, the pocket itself has a velcro strap for securing the battery in place inside the pocket.

  • Place the battery in the battery pocket on the device and secure battery.

  • Position the battery pocket near the NOVA power button so that the connector cable can easily reach between them.

  • Place the therapy pad or wrap so it sits comfortably against clothing or skin as directed. PEMF penetrates several centimeters and can reach an injury site through layers of clothing or bandages.

  • Secure with the included straps/wrap so it does not slip during normal movement.

  • Make sure the cable is not kinked, pulled tight, or under strain.

For patients who are using NervanaPEMF following surgery, follow your doctor's instructions. Usually, in the case of post-operative therapy, patients will carefully place the device over a layer of bandaging. If a surgery site is exposed, patients are usually advised to place a thin sanitary layer between the skin and the device. Please ask your physician and doctor's staff for instructions to treat a post-operative surgery sites.

4          Start Your Treatment Session: "As Easy as 1-2-3!'
  1. Connect the battery pack to the power button/controller on the device, using the connector cable provided. The cable will connect from one of the USB ports on the battery to the USB-C input located on the NOVA power button on the device. (The connector cable serves two purposes: to charge the device and to activate the device!)

  2. Once the battery and device are connected, activate the battery by giving a short press to the button on the side of the battery. Do this right before you press the square NOVA power button on the device.

  3. Before turning the medical device on by pushing the NOVA power button, the rechargeable battery pack must first be activated by gently pushing the button on the side of the battery pack. When pushed, the indicator lights will appear briefly, indicating that the battery pack is activated.

  4. Press the power button on the device and wait/hold for four seconds to turn the device on. (The power button and treatment indicator button are one in the same.) The device is ON when the PURPLE light appears.  This is the first of three treatment programs. By pushing the button again, the next treatment program appears and so forth.

  5. Select your treatment program from three treatment settings. It's as easy as 1-2-3:

    1. (power on) PURPLE light is HEAT only

    2. (second push) GREEN light is PEMF only

    3. (third push) BLUE light is HEAT & PEMF combined (recommended)

During treatment:

  • Once the device light turns on, your treatment session has begun and runs for one hour.

  • Make sure your battery is secured in its slip. With the cervical device, make sure the battery back is attached firmly to the left lapel, right above the power button.

  • If you selected heat and PEMF therapy (blue light), you will feel heat during the one hour session.

  • With the exception of heat, you will not feel vibration, electric sensation, or any kind of pressure whatsoever.

  • You may continue light daily activities while wearing the device but make sure the device stays securely in place while undergoing your one-hour treatment.

  • Though it is unlikely, if you experience discomfort, skin irritation, dizziness, or any unusual symptoms, stop use, remove your device, and contact your provider.

5          Recommended Use & Frequency

Your healthcare provider will determine:

  • How many sessions per day. (2-3)

  • How long each session should last (1 hour)

  • Total duration of use (days/weeks) (30 days)

Typical clinical use patterns may include daily or multiple daily sessions over the affected area to support continuous pain relief and tissue recovery, but you should always follow your prescribed instructions rather than adjusting on your own.

6          After Each Session
  • The device turns off automatically after it has completed the one hour programmed session.

  • The device can be turned OFF at any time by holding down the power button for four seconds.

  • When therapy is done, gently remove the wrap.

  • Store the device in a cool, dry place.

  • Recharge the battery pack as needed using the power cable and brick provided with your device.

7          Care & Safety
  • Use only as directed and only on intact skin.

  • Do not modify, disassemble, or attempt repairs yourself.

  • Keep away from extreme heat, moisture, and young children.

  • Do not use while bathing, swimming, or in water.

  • Inform your healthcare provider of any implanted devices or major medical conditions before use.
